What's an ROV?

It's a Remotely Operated Vehicle. They're used by Marine Biologists all around the world to go places people cannot safely go to perform studies and tasks in harsh underwater environments.

"To me, ROVs serve as the best tool for exploration of our oceans, and currently the best tool we have for solving ecological disasters like we have in the Gulf right now."

- Andrew Thomas, Team Mentor & FFHS Science Teacher

Why Hawaii?

This years competition is focused on the Loihi Seamount, an active undersea volcano that will eventually become the newest Hawaiian island. There have been several attempts to place monitoring equipment at the site but due to the dynamic nature of the location the communication lines have been severed several times.

This years mission is centered around restoring the monitoring equipment and to collect new data and specimens while on the site.
